Evaluation & Assessment Strategies

Evaluation of student learning is aligned with the stated intended learning outcomes for each course.  This involves a multi-faceted approach which is used to assess students’ critical thinking as well as  attitudinal skills. For this reason, evaluation is a blend of practical and theoretical tasks divided in a  pre-defined ratio1of coursework to end of semester examination2. In some cases, summative  assessments will include both a skill assessment and knowledge assessment.The assessment  strategies used will include, but are not limited to:  

  • Coursework: 

Coursework will be a combination of any of the following: 

  1. Weekly tests Performance Tasks 
  2. Laboratory activities Demonstrations 

iii. Field based assessment Portfolios 

  1. Projects (individual or group) Oral Reports and Presentations v. Condensed or summary reports Graphical Displays 
  2. Self and peer evaluations Interviews  

vii. Seminars Conference Participation 

  • Final Examination  

To enhance quality, there is a standardized examination for each course, which is common to all  colleges. There are typically three (3) examination sessions within an academic year: December,  May and August. The end of semester examination (Final Examination) will be a combination of  any of the following

  1. Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) 
  2. Structured Questions (SQs) 

iii. Practical Assignments (PAs)

Main Campus

Excelsior Community College is a registered institution with the Ministry of Education, Youth and Information (MoEYI) in Jamaica, and the University Council of Jamaica (UCJ), the local accreditation body.

 

Excelsior Community College obtained Candidacy for Institutional Accreditation in March 2019 from the UCJ. As such, our  programmes curricula are developed in alignment with the UCJ’s and recognized industries occupational standards. Additionally, our programmes are aligned to the Jamaica Tertiary Education Commission (J-TEC), the National Qualifications Framework of Jamaica (NQF-J) and certifications are to be offered by the Council of Community Colleges of Jamaica (CCCJ).
