This course provides foundational understanding of occupational health and safety in the mining and quarrying sector in Jamaica. Learners will understand the different regulations/legislations that impact operations at the workplace. The approach is risk-based and includes job hazard analysis and the use of personal protective equipment in quarry operations.
This course reviews current applicable mining and quarrying regulations in Jamaica. Issues concerning ethical business conduct, land ownership and minerals, withdrawals, environmental laws, exploration permits, and taxation are summarized. The requirements to obtain and maintain a quarry licence along with proper completion of required forms and the legal requirements under the National Environmental and Protection Agency, Tax Administration of Jamaica and the Company Office of Jamaica are also explored. The focus is to understand the legal and ethical obligations required under the licence granted by the Commissioner.
This course provides foundational understanding of the quarrying sector in Jamaica. Learners will understand the social and economic issues associated with the exploration, exploitation and development of mineral sites locally. A brief examination of the planning process for extraction, methods and techniques used, along with the processing of minerals from an economic perspectives
This course seeks to develop a greater understanding of the requirements of blasting so that learners can carry out their responsibilities in a safe and environmentally conscious manner, without risk of causing injury or damage, and to maximize blasting performance whilst optimizing overall operating costs.
The environment provides the foundation for the operations of a quarry/mine and therefore requires the application of best practices to extracting, processing and transporting minerals from the plant to the final customer. Under the different regulations, quarry managers must comply with different requirements that pertain to licensure and operations. The course seek to provide foundational competencies on environmental best practices and rehabilitation activities that are mandated for the successful operations of a quarry/mine.
This course will provide opportunity to persons completing the professional certification to demonstrate competencies and knowledge acquired over the period of the training in the various courses. This component of the programme seeks to allow the learner to produce a portfolio of evidences to verify their understanding and skill in quarry management. It serves as a culminating activity for the programme.
This course is designed to provide operators of mines and quarries with an understanding of the requisite tools used in business management. It will expose operators to the concept of entrepreneurship and the techniques used in managing a business. In addition, this course will enable operators to understand and apply principles that are critical to financing, managing risk, customer relations, contractual obligations, basic marketing and public relations. Participants will demonstrate mastery by development of a mine or quarry business plan.
