Programme Rationale

The rationale for the Professional Certificate in Quarry Managers Certification programme at Community Colleges is dictated by the focus of government and non-governmental organizations, the long-term goals of the country, the growth in the economy and world-wide trends in the labour force market. Economic factors such as increasing Gross Domestic Product (GDP) will provide the evidence needed for new programmes in these colleges as it highlights sectors which are doing well.

Programme Description

The minerals sector, which includes quarrying, surface mining, cement and related manufacturing industries, is vital to the world economy. There are fifteen (15) credits in this Professional Certificate in Quarry Managers Certification programme.

Programme Goals

This dynamic programme is designed to develop the necessary knowledge, skills, competencies and attitudes to meet the needs of the various stakeholders within the mining and quarrying industry.

Matriculation Requirements

To be eligible for entry, applicants must satisfy the following:

Working experience in the mineral industry, as well as positive support from your employer
High school graduate with three CXC’s CSEC subjects – Mathematics, English Language
and one other Subject OR
Prior Learning Assessment – Read and write proficiently with minimum of three (3) years’
work experience in the mining and quarrying sector and at least 23 years old.

Target Group

This programme targets any of the following individuals:

Persons with industry experience seeking certification at supervisory level.
Persons with industry experience who are supervisors but need formal training.
Persons who want to operate a business in the mineral extractive sub-sector.
Person seeking licensure to operate a mining or quarrying operation in Jamaica.
Persons seeking employment in the mineral extractive sector.

Main Campus

Excelsior Community College is a registered institution with the Ministry of Education, Youth and Information (MoEYI) in Jamaica, and the University Council of Jamaica (UCJ), the local accreditation body.

Excelsior Community College obtained Candidacy for Institutional Accreditation in March 2019 from the UCJ. As such, our programmes curricula are developed in alignment with the UCJ’s and recognized industries occupational standards. Additionally, our programmes are aligned to the Jamaica Tertiary Education Commission (J-TEC), the National Qualifications Framework of Jamaica (NQF-J) and certifications are to be offered by the Council of Community Colleges of Jamaica (CCCJ).
